Welcome to Big Burning School

Big Burning School is a special place where history, community, and learning come together. Located in Bad Axe, Michigan, our one-room schoolhouse serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. With approximately 25 students and one dedicated teacher, we provide a close-knit learning environment where every child is known, supported, and encouraged to grow.

Our school has deep roots in the community. As far as we know, Big Burning School was in existence several years before Bad Axe became the county seat, beginning in 1891. After the Great Fire of 1881 destroyed the forests of Michigan’s Thumb, a portion of the building where the school stands withstood the fire. The school was named Big Burning School for that reason. The land on which the school stands was deeded by William Elvin, the grandfather of Bill Elvin. Historical records include a list of teachers who served from 1893 through 1896, although records from 1897 to 1914 are not currently available. We also know that John Clark’s aunt taught at Big Burning School from 1891 to 1910. Art Hogan taught during this same era, though the exact dates of his service are unknown. The original school bell is located on the property and is currently being restored. Once restoration is complete, it will be displayed for public viewing.

Over the years, enrollment has changed significantly. In the late 1800s, as many as 95 students attended Big Burning School. Today, our school community includes approximately 25 students, all learning together under the guidance of one teacher. This multigrade setting allows students to build strong relationships across grade levels, develop independence, and experience the benefits of a caring, family-like school community.

Big Burning School is a tuition-free public school that follows Michigan Department of Education guidelines and benchmarks. Along with core academic instruction, students enjoy weekly art and music classes that support creativity, expression, and well-rounded development.

Families may enroll through the Schools of Choice program, and no tuition is required. We welcome families who value personalized instruction, meaningful relationships, and the opportunity to be part of a proud educational tradition.
